Couple claims their $43K-per-month rental was infested with vermin

Georgia couple Darrell and Tara Mays claim their pricey Upper East Side rental became a nightmare filled with rats — both dead and alive.

The couple filed a lawsuit stating that their swanky 10,000-square-foot townhouse, which they rented for $43,000 a month, was “extraordinarily and truly infested with vermin” and accusing the owners of fraud, according to the New York Post.

The couple’s suit claims that over the six months in which they resided in the house “multiple attempts were made in vain to battle the severe infestation, with the Mays finding themselves continuously disposing of dead rodents, dodging live rodents, cleaning rodent droppings and living with the toxic odor caused when unlocated dead rodents decompose.”

The Mays also say that the home had leaks and heating problems, among other rat-related issues.

A lawyer for the owners, John and Elizabeth Robertshaw, told the Post that the Mays “initiated this baseless lawsuit to try and find any way possible to get out of their leases.” The attorney added that the Robertshaws had lived in the townhouse until about two months before the Mays moved in.
