For about £5 million — or roughly $6.5 million — you too can live like a banking mogul. Actually, more like in the former mansion of a banking mogul.
One of seven apartments within the country home of J.P. Morgan, Jr. is on the market in Hertfordshire, England, Barron’s reported. Developers carved up the mansion, which sits outside London, into the units more than 10 years ago.
The American banker bought the property in 1910. On weekends, Morgan hosted sporting parties on the 55-acre estate with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, among his guests. Morgan later loaned the mansion to U.S. Ambassador Joe Kennedy.
The duplex on the market — “The Windsor Apartment” — has five bedrooms, spans 5,100 square feet and has original stained glass panels. The mansion’s former baronial hall has been converted to the Windsor unit’s open living and dining rooms.
The apartments today share underground parking, a gym, the grounds and a tennis court. Real estate agency Strutt & Parker is handling the listing. [Barron’s] — Mary Diduch
