UPDATED, July 9, 12:27 p.m.: Women-focused co-working space The Wing is opening its second location in Brooklyn, signing on for roughly 17,000 square feet at Largo‘s 71-75 North 7th Street in Williamsburg.
The firm, which counts WeWork and actress Kerry Washington among its investors, will take the second and third floors of the three-story building, a source told The Real Deal.
The Wing revealed plans to open in the neighborhood in April of last year. At the time of the announcement, the company said that it was still in the process of identifying a location.
The firm’s new home, which has the alternate address 76 North 8th Street, was previously planned as a four-story residential condo building. Largo changed course last August, announcing plans for an industrial-themed office property on the site. Largo did not respond to a request for comment.
The Wing recently signed a lease at Thor Equities’ 25 West 39th Street near Bryant Park, according to an announcement released on Tuesday. The firm’s new 7,000-square-foot space will feature amenities such as showers, lockers, a lactation room, a beauty room and a full-service cafe. The new branch, located on the building’s 11th floor, was designed in-house.
The company recently took over the entirety of 137 Second Avenue in the East Village for its corporate headquarters. The firm, which started with four employees, renovated the 22,000-square-foot former hospital to house its 150 employees.
The firm, founded by Audrey Gelman and Lauren Kassan, launched in 2016 as an exclusive space for women. Last year, the New York City Human Rights Commission conducted an investigation on whether its no-men-allowed rule violated local laws. The company has since amended its membership policy to allow all genders, including men, citing a need to be inclusive of gender nonconforming and trans people. The investigation is now closed.
The company has so far raised $117.5 million in venture funding. The largest tranche came last December, in a $75 million Series C funding round led by Sequoia Capital, Airbnb and Upfront Ventures. Other backers that joined the round include angel investors connected through the anti-sexual harassment organization Time’s Up and rival WeWork.
With the new leases, the company now have five locations in New York City. Its other branches are in 45 East 20th Street in the Flatiron District, 52 Mercer Street in Soho and 1 Main Street in Dumbo. To date, the firm has opened eight locations in five cities across the US. It also has plans to open international outposts in Toronto and London.
Update: This story has been updated to clarify the ownership of 71-75 North 7th Street.
