Fresh off announcing his retirement from baseball, former Mets pitching ace Matt Harvey has a new gig — in real estate.
Harvey’s career off the mound begins at commercial real estate firm Newmark, where he’ll serve as managing director of its multifamily debt origination and advisory unit, the New York Post reported.
According to the Post, Harvey won’t start pitching loans right away. Instead, his job will be to develop new client relationships as he tries to become an ace in his new field.
Harvey will join the Capital Markets Strategies division, which appears to be no accident. The former pitcher has a close tie with a key player in the firm.
Harvey fostered a relationship with Anthony Orso, the president of Capital Markets Strategies, during his 10-year playing career, which concluded last month.
The pair met in 2013 at Citi Field when Harvey, in his first full season in the big leagues, was helping Orso’s son learn how to throw a new pitch.
But Harvey said he’s always had a thing for his new industry.
“I’ve always been interested in the many different aspects of real estate,” Harvey told The Post. “By joining an incredibly successful firm such as Newmark, I will be able to learn and grow from some of the best in the industry.”
Harvey, who honed his baseball skills in Connecticut, became a star pitcher for Mets before injuries derailed his baseball career. To the extent that commercial real estate brokerage is about building relationships, conversation-starting should not be an issue.
The firm told the Post it hopes Harvey can “expand the group’s footprint in the tristate region,” given his history and connection to the area.
