Massive resi development near Samsung factory moving forward

Austin’s growth upward is paused as the city’s office market struggles through a hangover of supply, but the metro area’s outward growth looks set for a knock-on effect from a major industrial project in the works in Taylor.

The ongoing multibillion-dollar development of a chipmaking plant by South Korea-based technology conglomerate Samsung is the driver of a major residential project that got approval from the suburban city’s planning and zoning commission, the Austin Business Journal reported.  

The 100-acre residential development, dubbed Turner Springs, would feature 253 single-family homes of various styles and sizes and about 700 apartment units, if Insite Development gets a final approval from the Taylor City Council. 

Plans filed by Insite, which has hired Taylor-based Top Notch Properties to market the property, call for 47 estates, 119 houses, 29 “cottages,” 34 townhomes and 24 “live-work residences.” No details on sizes of the various categories of residences have been provided.

The multifamily units and 24,000 square feet of “commercial live-work” space would be spread across the development, according to filings.

The project would rise on land owned by an entity identified publicly as Turner Bobby Jr Etal since 2000, according to public records. The site is on Country Road 369 just north of U.S. 79, which connects Taylor to Round Rock.

Taylor’s population is about 17,000 but officials are betting on growth to be spurred by the Samsung plant, which is expected to include 2.2 million square feet of industrial space across 2,000 acres.

Samsung spurred a knock-on effect for industrial space in the area before the trend carried over to residential. Among other companies expanding in the general area since Samsung announced its plans in Taylor include Wonik Materials North America, MSS International, KoMiCo Technology, Fine Semitech Corporation, EcoMicron, Hanyang Eng USA and LS Electric Company.
