An initiative to boost Nassau County’s dire fiscal position led to a massive decline in reductions on home assessments, according to data from county officials. Nassau County granted just 61,100 reductions on home values for the 2020-2021 assessment role, far below the 174,000 reductions it granted the prior year, according to Newsday. The decrease is largely attributed to County Executive Laura Curran’s decision to end an eight-year freeze on reassessments implemented by her predecessor, Ed Mangano. Republicans in the county legislature argued that it would simply result in thousands filing appeals in small claims court and with the County Attorney’s Office. In turn, Curran said the lack of reductions illustrated that the assessments were fair and accurate. [Newsday] – James Kleimann
