Historic Sag Harbor estate sells for half its original asking

Restored Nathan P. Howell House hit market for $21M

The Hamptons housing market has been booming during the pandemic, with some properties selling for record high sums.

But in Sag Harbor, one homeowner has settled for far less to close the deal on a 187-year-old Greek Revival estate.

The Nathan P. Howell House, a restored historic residence at 238 Main Street, sold for $9.5 million. That’s about 55 percent less than when it hit the market at $21 million. Richard Demato was the seller.

Built in 1833, the 10,000-square-foot estate has seven bedrooms and eight full bathrooms. It is located on over an acre, and has a pool and a garden.

“A house will sit on the market for so long, it becomes stale,” said David Cox of Compass, who represented the unnamed buyer. “I’d love to say I’m a magician, and I just pulled the craziest rabbit out of a hat. But I’m just a facilitator.”

Cox added: “This house is such an important piece of American history that I always just wanted to see it fall into the right hands.”
