One of the consultants hired by Sag Harbor to construct a development code for the village’s waterfront told its board that some historic buildings there could never be replicated under current zoning rules, according to the Southampton Press.
Chris Hawley said that he often looks at vintage postcards of an area before analyzing a community’s zoning code to get a better sense of historic character. He examines whether the buildings in those postcards could be replicated.
“Everything you see in this historic Sag Harbor view is essentially illegal or nonconforming” under current zoning, he said.
In October, the village board put a development moratorium in place on the waterfront to allow consultants to put together a new zoning code for the area. [Southampton Press] — Dennis Lynch
