Empire Resorts wants to develop a casino at the Newburgh Mall and is in early discussions with Newburgh town officials about the project.
The company, a subsidiary of Malaysia-based conglomerate Genting Group, wants to call the casino: Newburgh project Resorts World Hudson Valley, according to Mid Hudson News. The publication first reported on the discussions.
Empire also operates Resorts World Catskills in Kiamesha Lake, N.Y.
The 40-year-old Newburgh Mall, which is owned by a partnership led by John J. Lease Realty, has faced vacancy issues and foreclosure. The casino would generate tax revenue for the town and or Orange County.
Another casino project in New York State has been proposed on the east end of Long Island, where the Shinnecock Nation wants to build a casino and hotel on its tribal lands in Southampton. The proposed development has become a point of controversy among locals.
