Amazon aims to open an Amazon Fresh-branded grocery store at the former home of a Fairway Market in Plainville, according to Newsday.
The supermarket would take up about 33,400 square feet of the roughly 55,200-square-foot store at 50 Manetto Hill Road that Fairway left in July. Kimco Realty owns the property.
Amazon Fresh is primarily a grocery delivery service, but as of last year also offers in-store shopping. There are eight operating in California and four in Illinois.
Amazon has made a push over the last year or so to expand its footprint across Long Island. The company wants to convert two buildings in Melville into a 300,000-square-foot last-mile warehouse. Amazon also plans to open a 91,000-square-foot distribution center at Francis S. Grabreski Airport in Westhampton, although some locals are fighting the proposal.
