Theater takes heat for Sag Harbor waterfront project
Locals criticize proposed development for its height and scale
Representatives for the Bay Street Theater are getting some pushback for their plans to build a theater complex on Sag Harbor’s waterfront, according to the Easthampton Star.
The Friends of Bay Street held an open forum about the plan last week and shared new details, including a height of 39 feet — four feet above the maximum allowed by the village code.
That height would be lower than condominiums under construction next door, but some called it too tall. Sag Harbor Partnership member April Gornik said it would be “visually overwhelming.”
Duncan Darrow, who has a law office in the area, said Friends of Bay Street Chairman Adam Potter “sounds like Robert Moses,” referring to the New York City urban planner who drastically changed the city with highways and bridges.
The theater’s executive director, Tracy Mitchell, said that “nothing is set in stone, except that Bay Street will be building a theater” on the West Water Street Shops property that the group bought last year.
