Islip Town is now part of a $3 billion federal project meant to protect miles of Eastern Long Island coastline and some of its priciest real estate.

Islip joined Suffolk County and four other towns in the Fire Island to Montauk Point project, according to Newsday.

The project is set to begin next year along 83 miles of coastline, and will include dredging, demolition, and dune restoration.

The federal government is footing $1.5 billion for the work, with Long Island taxpayers covering the rest.

Hurricane Sandy in 2013 was the last major weather event to have a significant impact on the coast. The storm devastated Fire Island, and upended its real estate market.
