Chairman, Chief Executive Officer

Under Freels’ direction, Midway has developed or acquired 55 million square feet of commercial real estate across office, industrial, retail, hospitality, multifamily, student housing and medical properties.

The company, which deals throughout the United States and Northern Mexico, briefly merged with Orlando-based Parkway Property Investments in the spring of 2023 in an effort to expand their reach across the Sun Belt. But that partnership had dissolved by the end of 2024.

CityCentre, in Houston’s Memorial area, is among its best-known projects and helped establish the firm as a mixed-use player. It’s a 47-acre district built on the former Town & Country Mall and opened in 2009.

The firm started construction on the redevelopment of Central Park Post Oak, a mixed-use district in Uptown Houston, in the spring of 2025. The work includes repositioning a 1.2 million-square-foot office building and constructing two retail buildings.

Midway had a scuffle with the city of Hutto in 2025, when its planned redevelopment of the 250-acre “Cottonwood” site fell through after nearly two years of negotiations. The local economic development corporation terminated talks, citing lack of progress and financing issues. Freels publicly criticized the city’s handling of the process.
