Jorge and Jose Mas and David Beckham

No one can bend it like Beckham, but Jorge and José Mas have shown they’ve got game when it comes to working the intersection of Miami’s commercial real estate, sports, and institutional chops.

The scions of a tech fortune tied to a prominent Cuban-American family in Miami now count legendary Brit, Beckham, as a partner, Ares Management as an investor, Softbank boss Masayoshi Son as a fellow dealmaker, and Argentinian star Lionel Messi as a marquee name for the $1 billion Miami Freedom Park development, which will be anchored by a 25,000-seat stadium for the city’s professional soccer organization. The megaproject will also include community athletic fields, over 1 million square feet of commercial space, and a new Miami City Hall.

The project has been in the works for nearly a decade, and the Mas brothers and Beckham have moved forward by getting a lease for a 73-acre site, buying out Son and Bolivian-American tech billionaire Marcelo Claure to get full control of Inter Miami, and scoring a $150 million investment from Ares. The stadium is expected to open later this year after overcoming challenges in 2022 to get city sign-off on the land lease. The trio agreed to pay $2.7 billion in rent over 99 years and $25 million in public benefits wrangled by local politicians to finish off a contentious site-selection and approval process.
