Tamara Gustavson

Largest Shareholder, Heir

Gustavson is a billionaire and the largest shareholder in a legacy LA company. Public Storage is the world’s biggest owner, operator and developer of self-storage facilities and was co-founded by her father B. Wayne Hughes. The company has more than 3,300 facilities across the United States and serves approximately two million customers. Gustavson was a vice president before joining the board of trustees of the $50 billion company. Public Storage, in Aug. 2025, withdrew an offer to acquire Abacus Storage King because it was “unable to match their independent board committee’s value assessment,” per CEO Joe Russell. The company reported a $180 million decrease in net income in the nine months ended Sept. 30 compared to a year earlier, which it said had a lot to do with foreign currency exchange losses.

Gustavson is Kentucky’s wealthiest woman and only billionaire. She served as chair of American Homes 4 Rent, which she is the largest individual shareholder of, too. The Hughes family owns about 25 percent of the company’s outstanding shares.
