Megamart USA will soon open a 75,000-square-foot Korean food emporium with a Michelin-starred chef in Daly City.

The local unit of Seoul-based Megamart will open Jagalchi, a megafood complex inside a former JCPenny store in the Serramonte Center mall at 63 Serramonte Center, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Jagalchi, a potential rival to the popular Korean-focused H Mart supermarket chain, will open its doors on March 28.

The complex, announced in May, will include specialty groceries, prepared foods, a seafood counter with an oyster bar, a restaurant, two bars and a bakery. Terms of its lease with Regency Centers, owner of the 1.1 million-square-foot mall, were not disclosed.

Jagalchi, named after Korea’s largest seafood market, will house Pogu, a 160-seat restaurant in the center of the store. Pogu comes from Jagalchi executive chef Tony Yoo, the first chef in Korea to win a Michelin star.

An adjoining cocktail bar will pour soju and other traditional Korean drinks.

Basquia, a 60-seat bakery, will focus on baked goods made with rice flour, plus handmade chocolate, Korean-style drinks and coffee.

Prepared foods at Jagalchi will include more than 200 banchan, or Korean side dishes, plus fresh tofu, 10 kinds of housemade kimchi, tteokbokki (rice cakes) and more.

A grocery store section will be stocked with everything from dumplings to ramen to Korean beauty products.

The store is a new offering by Mega Mart, an international Korean supermarket chain with two Bay Area locations, in Fremont and Sunnyvale, according to its website. Mega Mart is also opening a new store in East Palo Alto, and possibly in Dublin.

After opening the world’s first Jagalchi here, the company plans to expand, according to the Chronicle.
