Coca-Cola to Shut Plant in Napa County, Switch to Co-Packer

Coca-Cola Company plans to close its production plant and warehouse in American Canyon, Napa County.

The closure was confirmed through a mass layoff disclosure to the state, according to a report by the San Francisco Business Times, with the news first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The plant, located at 1201 Commerce Boulevard, will cease its production operations on June 30, while continuing to function as a warehouse until the end of 2025.

The closure dovetails into Coke’s intent to restructure its real estate and production strategy. The company’s products will continue to be packaged for Bay Area consumers through third-party partnerships.

Specifically, Coca-Cola announced that the production volume from the Napa facility will transfer to a co-packer in the region, but specific details about the new operator were not disclosed.

Other consumer goods companies have recently closed facilities in the Bay Area, including a grocery warehouse of Amazon.com in San Francisco’s Dogpatch and 11 Goodwill stores in the region.

According to Coke’s disclosure, 135 jobs will be cut. While most employees will be let go at the end of June, about 10 will remain employed through August to handle administrative tasks tied to the closure. The employees at the facility are not unionized.

The company has operated in American Canyon since December 2002, when it acquired the site. The 17-acre, 350,000-square-foot facility has produced and packaged various Coca-Cola beverages, including Powerade, Minute Maid, Vitamin Water and Gold Peak Tea.

The closure is part of a broader strategic plan Coca-Cola announced in 2021 aimed at realigning its operational footprint to better respond to shifting consumer demand. The decision reflects ongoing changes within the beverage industry, where companies increasingly outsource production to optimize efficiency.

Coca-Cola is the world’s largest beverage maker. It dates to 1886 and is currently run by CEO James Quincey.
