Marc Andreessen is getting out of Dodge — or in this case, Atherton.
The billionaire tech investor sold his 12,000-square-foot estate in the wealthy town for nearly $27.2 million, the San Francisco Standard reported. That’s $2,266 per square foot. The venture capitalist listed the property at 164 Elena Avenue for more than $33 million last year. The buyer’s identity hasn’t been disclosed.
Andreessen paid $16.6 million for the home in 2007. The cofounder of the Andreessen Horowitz venture capital firm and early web browsers Mosaic and Netscape moved in the year after marrying Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen, daughter of billionaire developer John Arrillaga who helped build up Silicon Valley into the tech hub it is today.
The main house boasts two kitchens, seven fireplaces and media entertainment options via “visible and concealed screens,” according to the listing.
Besides the main home, the property also has a one-bedroom guest house, a detached studio and a four-car garage partially converted into an office space. The home has a reflecting pool, fountains and a pergola; however, there’s no swimming pool or sports court.
Andreessen dropped more than $250 million on three properties in Malibu in 2021 and 2022. He, along with basketball power couple Steph and Ayesha Curry, objected to Atherton city officials adding density to the town at that time.
Atherton has become a go-to escape for Silicon Valley’s tech titans over the past decade. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and former Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg have planted flags in the town over the years. Schmidt offloaded his Atherton property last year and spent $24 million on a three-bedroom apartment in San Francisco’s swanky Pacific Heights neighborhood.
Andreessen’s Atherton home sale price represents about half of the year’s priciest sale in the Peninsula town. That award goes to tech Seagate CEO Stephen Luczo, who sold a property in April for $51.5 million.
