Sutter Health is planning to open another hospital in the Bay Area in the coming years, this one in the heart of Silicon Valley.

The Sacramento-based health care provider is planning to build an eight-story, 850,000-square-foot medical facility at 2831 and 2841 Mission College Boulevard in Santa Clara, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The development near Levi’s Stadium will replace an office complex.

The plans call for 272 beds, an emergency department, intensive care unit, labor and delivery department and other services for patients. The hospital is projected to open in 2031, and some of the buildings on the campus will open in 2027.

The hospital is one part of Sutter Health’s larger multi-site expansion in Santa Clara. The proposed medical center will be one component of Sutter West Santa Clara Campus, a five-building, 700,000-square-foot campus that will also offer care units for cancer, orthopedic and sports medicine, women’s health, heart and vascular health.

Sutter Health already has a presence in Santa Clara. Last month, the health care system opened the nearby Sutter East Santa Clara Campus at 2441 Mission College Boulevard. That complex spans about 300,000 square feet and includes primary care, speciality care, ambulatory surgery and urgent care.

Sutter Health’s East and West Santa Clara campuses cost an estimated $2.8 billion.

Sutter Health, which owns more than 20 hospitals in Northern California, has been expanding in the Bay Area this year.

It bought a 12-acre life sciences campus in Emeryville for $450 million in February. The health care firm bought the two-building, 530,000-square-foot campus and a handful of vacant lots at 53rd and Horton Streets. It plans to redevelop them into a 1.3 million-square-foot hospital and medical center as part of its $1 billion Sutter Emeryville Campus expansion in the East Bay.

The purchase from Blackstone’s BioMed Realty worked out to $615 per square foot. The firm has made seven real estate purchases to assemble the forthcoming Sutter Emeryville Campus. The medical center there is expected to begin serving patients in 2028, with the hospital opening in 2032 or 2033.
