Bay Club now owns the entire block surrounding its longtime Northern Waterfront home.

The locally based fitness and hospitality chain announced on Thursday that it acquired three adjacent parcels along the Embarcadero for $65 million, the San Francisco Business Times reported. LaSalle Investment Management sold the more than 150,000-square-foot property bounded by Sansome, Battery, Greenwich and Lombard Streets.

Bay Club opened its flagship location at 150 Greenwich Street in 1977 as one of the first co-ed athletic clubs in the Golden State. In purchasing the entire block, the wellness chain reaffirms its commitment to the city. “San Francisco is our home, and we’re tripling down on it,” Bay Club CEO Matthew Stevens said.

Bay Club’s new acquisition consists of 1 Lombard Street, which spans roughly 75,000 square feet in a 130-year-old building; 150 Greenwich Street, which houses Bay Club’s 45,000-square-foot flagship facility; and 1444 Sansome Street, consisting of an approximately 35,000-square-foot parking garage for members.

The company previously had the opportunity to buy the property in 2012 but opted to pass, Stevens told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We just weren’t in the right position as a company to be able to do that,” he said.

Bay Club currently occupies roughly 100,000 square feet of the 150,000-square-foot block. The firm plans to expand its footprint at the site now that it has become its permanent home.

Bay Club has three other locations in San Francisco and 35 locations across the country. Most of those outposts are in California. Other local acquisitions completed by the chain include a 2023 buying spree where it gobbled up the Rolling Hills Club in Novato and the Crow Canyon Country Club in Danville. The club has more than 150,000 members nationwide, often brought into the fold under a unique shared membership model that allows up to 10 people to join under one flexible membership.
