The redevelopment of a former Macy’s in San Francisco’s Union Square is making progress and has just signed its first tenant.

Peruvian-Japanese restaurant Chotto Matte will occupy the 17,000-square-foot rooftop space of the project located at 100 Stockton Street, San Francisco Business Times reported.

The restaurant will include traditional Japanese and Peruvian dishes such as tiradito, ceviche, sushi and sashimi and will serve as the company’s second location in the U.S. — the first of which is in Miami.

Chotto Matte was represented by Rielly Retail Solutions and the landlord was represented by the developer Blatteis & Schnur as well as Cushman and Wakefield.

The new building is part of an $80 million renovation of what used to be a Macy’s men’s department store that began in January 2019. Once finished, the eight-story building will offer more than 250,000 square feet of mixed-use space.

The landlord is reportedly looking to fill the first two floors with luxury retailers, while the middle floors will likely be used for entertainment and hospitality purposes.

Another Macy’s building in Union Square, located on Geary Street, is also in the process of being redeveloped. Also known as the I. Magnin Building, this redevelopment will bring housing to the area with 21 condominium units. The plans for the site call for 63,240 square feet of retail from the basement to the third floor, 81,460 square feet of office on the fourth, fifth sixth, seventh and 11th floors and 49,700 square feet of residential space from the eighth to 10th floors.

The Chotto Matte space in the latest building is being designed by Andy Martin Architecture and will include a sushi bar and a Japanese robata grill. The space will also make use of the 3,000-square-foot terrace that overlooks Union Square.

The new Union Square location is set to open in 2022.
