A couple who own a boarded-up strip mall in San Jose wants to replace it with 160 affordable apartments.
An architectural firm hired by Anastasios and Argiroula Papapsomas of San Jose has filed preliminary plans to build the apartment complex at 1190 Hillsdale Avenue, next to Almaden Expressway, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
The 160-unit project would include “affordable multifamily units,” according to the proposal filed by the unidentified designer. A developer for the project was not disclosed.
The project applicant seeks to employ Senate Bill 330 to fast-track its approval. The law, enacted in 2020, limits local roadblocks that could stymie housing construction.
In September last year, the Papapsomas family listed the 35,700-square-foot shopping center at the corner of Hillsdale and Newberry avenues, a few blocks west of Capitol Expressway auto dealers, for $3.5 million, or $4.3 million per acre.
The 0.8-acre, L-shaped shopping center is now in escrow, according to Loopnet.
