Live Eat Work and Play: Collection 14 Delivers Eco-Living and Modern Appliances from AjMadison
Collection 14 is one of Washington DC’s largest redevelopment projects in the last decade. Located at 2102-2124 14 Street, NW, and 1400 W Street, NW, 20009, along the vibrant 14 Street corridor, this mixed-use project incorporated 233 residential units, 25,000 square-feet of retail, 5,300 square-feet of office space, and a 4,000 square-foot event space.
Residents at Collection 14 benefit from close proximity to the bustling 14 Street corridor along with top-tier amenities such as a state-of-the-art fitness center, business lounge, pet spa, concierge, security, and a rooftop penthouse lounge with private gathering rooms, grilling stations, fire pits, and lawn games.
According to Arman Hekmat, Development Analyst at Madison Investments, “14th Street is the cities restaurant and entertainment corridor, with close proximity to public transportation and the metro. It is also directly adjacent to the Reeves Center which is going to be redeveloped. The event space at Collection 14 will provide the possibility for the community to share and display local art” Hekmat adds, “This project will provide more options for residential housing in the community. This development will include 20 Inclusionary Zoning (IZ) affordable housing units.”
As a redevelopment project, the team at Madison Investments prioritized blending the historic facade and new construction. “As part of the project’s plan, we preserved a collection of historic facades and an entire historic building, which was subsequently integrated into the new construction.” Mentions Hekmat, “The goal was not to be just another new big building behind a bunch of historic buildings but to integrate the new with the old in a way that was intentional and brings the best of both the new and the old architecture”.
The residential units offer 360-degree views and quality construction and detailing. The appliances were supplied by AjMadison. The building is LEED Certified, and sustainability was a major consideration. According to Jeannine Muller, of Perkins Eastman, “We selected appliances that would meet our LEED goals. According to Muller, “The DC market is trending toward small, efficient unit layouts. This project maximizes efficiency within a compact floorplan and provides amenity spaces for residents to enjoy outside of their units.” Small space layouts included appliances that met the project’s design, efficiency, and space considerations. While units offer an efficient layout, another focus of the project was accessibility. Muller continues “The project was designed in a way that gives people of all abilities the opportunity to live, work, and play seamlessly. Spaces are designed to be inclusive for all. There were some challenges that arised with the Accessible (ADA) units that required different appliances than other units. AjMadison was very helpful in suggesting alternative products that would solve the challenges. For instance, we needed a stove and oven that was 34-inches tall rather than the standard 36-inch height. They were able to find a product that met this while also meeting budget and design criteria.”
