Charney Companies Infuses Union Channel with Brooklyn Spirit

For the latest entry in our Developer Diaries series, TRD headed out to Gowanus for a look inside Charney Companies’ Union Channel. Tucked between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens, Union Channel features a facade inspired by the area’s industrial history and comfortable, modern homes.

“The ideal resident for Union Channel is anybody who wants to live in a great, vibrant neighborhood in Brooklyn,” says Charney Companies Principal Sam Charney.

When designing the building, the Charney team took visual cues from the bridges that span the nearby Gowanus Canal.

“It has dimpled panels to mimic the rivets of the bridges on Union and Carroll Street,” explains Charney. “The chevron pattern of the facade as it undulates along the street is reminiscent of the bulkheading that was done on the canal to preserve the canal itself.”

Charney Companies took this same elegant and practical approach to designing the kitchens inside Union Channel. To honor the neighborhood’s legacy of makers and manufacturers, the Charney team chose Bosch for the kitchen appliances.

“We put together the Bosch appliance package that’s in this kitchen here, including a built-in custom panel refrigerator, custom panel built-in dishwasher, high end convection built-in wall oven, separate electric cooktop and beautiful microwave,” says Andrew Karcich, Regional Builder Sales Manager for Bosch manufacturer B/S/H/.

Charney and Rosie Tilley, Head of Development for Charney Companies, showed off the built-in wall oven’s pizza mode, the perfect setting for home chefs who want to cook their own gourmet pizza without leaving the comfort of their kitchen.
