Hudson Yards
Hudson Yards refers to both a development and neighborhood in New York City. The neighborhood stretches from Eight Avenue to the West Side Highway between roughly 30th and 42nd Streets. The neighborhood includes the Javits Center, a development from Brookfield Partners called Manhattan West, and arguably goes all the way to Penn Station. The Hudson Yards development spans a large portion of the neighborhood, housing over 100 shops and restaurants as well as office and residential towers and 14 acres of public plazas. What is in Hudson Yards?
The neighborhood is home to several large developments, the Javits Center, the top of the High Line park, and The Real Deal. The Hudson Yards development includes the Vessel, retail anchored by Coach, office spaces that house or will house companies such as BlackRock, BGC, VaynerMedia, SAP, and L'Oreal, luxury condo and rental towers, the Equinox Hotel, and The Shed.
Who built the Hudson Yards development?
The Hudson Yards project was a development by Related Companies and Oxford Property Group. It was designed by architectural firm Kohn Pederson Fox along with others including Thomas Heatherwick, who designed the Vessel, the structural landmark that sits in the center of the development.
When was Hudson Yards built?
Developers officially broke ground on the first stage of Hudson Yards on December 4, 2012. However, the development is built in some places on platforms over active rail yards, and drilling for the structures that support these platforms started in March of 2014. Construction is ongoing, but the first phase opened to the public in March of 2019. Completion is estimated in 2024.
How has the Hudson Yards neighborhood changed?
The Far West Side and Hudson Yards neighborhoods have changed dramatically as a result of new developments in the area. The High Line, renovated Javits Center, extension of the 7 train, and Hudson Yards developments have all brought an increased number of retailers, restaurants, and residents to the neighborhood. Attractions like the High Line and the Vessel have changed the face of the neighborhood and increased its attractiveness to tourists.
