Judge rejects Mamdani’s bid to pause Pinnacle auction, paves way for Summit takeover
Mayor had championed tenants’ cause and vowed to intervene
Zohran Mamdani was elected to the state Assembly in 2020, unseating Democratic incumbent Aravella Simotas to represent a Queens district that includes Astoria and Long Island City. He was re-elected in 2022. In a major upset, Mamdani won the Democratic primary for mayor in June 2025, edging out the long-presumed front-runner, Gov. Andrew Cuomo. A Democratic Socialist, Mamdani ran on a platform that he would freeze rents for the city’s housing stock.
