UTSA to expand campus with $124M “innovation” building

The University of Texas at San Antonio is growing.

The UT System Board of Regents approved plans for a $124 million Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Careers building, the San Antonio Business Journal reported. The building will rise on a site along Dolorosa Street and San Pedro Creek.

The new development, San Pedro II, will sit next to the recently erected San Pedro I building, which holds the School of Data Science and National Security Collaboration Center. That building is scheduled to open in January.

San Pedro II will span 80,000 square feet and house the school’s interdisciplinary and collaborative programs in business, engineering and sciences.

“This investment extends our efforts, launched in 2018, to support national security, cybersecurity and data sciences here in San Antonio,” UTSA President Taylor Eighmy said in a media release.

Funding for the new building will consist of $52 million from State of Texas Tuition Revenue Bond proceeds and $72 million from UT System Permanent University Fund bond proceeds.

“This expansion of our downtown footprint reflects our intentionality in situating our academic offerings and learning experiences in the heart of our city’s business community,” said Kimberly Andrews Espy, UTSA provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

Overland|Gensler is designing the project.

Construction is expected to begin next summer. The building will include public space, meeting and conference rooms and outdoor space that can be incorporated into the classrooms or public art space.
