An Alamo Heights mansion that was previously home to the wife of the Luby’s Cafeteria founder has landed on the market for almost $2 million.
Built in 1977, the nearly 6,000-square-foot home at 350 Argyle Avenue, across the street from the Argyle Club, has been listed for $1.9 million, the San Antonio Express-News reported. The price comes to about $331 per square foot for the house in this exclusive inner-city enclave. Phyllis Browning from the Phyllis Browning Co. is listing the home.
Kathleen Lane Luby bought the home in 2005, and she died in 2020.
Her husband, Bob Luby, died of heart complications in 1998. At the time of his death, Luby’s had more than 200 cafeterias in 11 states, including 160 in Texas. The chain was sold to Houston restaurateurs Chris and Harris Pappas in 2001 and later to a member of the family that founded the Flying Food Group, a national airline caterer. Luby’s now has 42 locations across the Lone Star State.
The three-bedroom home initially hit the market in February 2021 asking $2.5 million but it was taken down.
Down the street, at 555 Argyle Avenue, a hillside mansion owned by a disgraced San Antonio lawyer hit the market last month asking just shy of $4 million.
Luby’s former home sits on a quarter acre at the corner of Argyle and Patterson avenues. The two-story home has a large entryway as well as formal living and dining rooms. The kitchen has been updated with a large counter island and all-new Thermador appliances, plus a butler’s pantry.
The primary bedroom features two sitting areas as well as double ensuite bathroom and closets. The home has two additional bedrooms and a large study, as well as a two-car garage with a bathroom and an outdoor patio area.
