Brookfield Properties plans to build two hotels as part of its $100 million expansion of the Woodlands Mall.
The New York-based developer secured support from the township’s board of directors, the Houston Chronicle reported. Brookfield expects to break ground by 2025.
Plans call for a 16-story hotel with 275 rooms and a 14-story hotel with 200 rooms. The cost breaks down to about $211,000 per room. The hotels will have easy access to the mall and will add 80,000 square feet of retail and 30,000 square feet of conference space.
The hotel development also aims to connect the mall to Market Street and may be carried out in two phases to minimize disruption to shopping.
A majority of the expansion will cover existing parking lots and a Forever 21 store, plans show.
Brookfield will begin looking for a hotel brand to run the space this year, the firm’s Brian Whaley said. An architect has been selected and designs are being finalized, he said.
The redevelopment previously garnered criticism from township board of directors members Kyle Watson and Brad Bailey because of a lack of public input.
Brookfield’s public presentation at a recent board meeting eased many of Watson’s concerns, he told the outlet.
“There were never questions about the merit of the project. We just had questions about the way it transpired,” Watson said. “These dominoes are slow to fall…but I know that we want to see this development be extremely successful for everybody in the community.”
