Third time might be the charm for Candace Evans. The Dallas publisher known for her local real estate news site CandysDirt.com is taking a third stab at seizing the District 11 City Council seat.
Evans will look to unseat incumbent Jaynie Schultz in the May 6 election. District 11 encompasses a section of North Dallas that stretches from Walnut Hill Lane to Keller Springs Road and is bookended by Dallas North Tollway and Central Expressway
Evans also ran for the seat in 2017 and 2021. Evans told The Real Deal she decided to run again because she cannot stand the way the council is handling real estate related issues.
“Real estate is the whole reason why I’m running,” she said.
Problems with the Valley View Mall project are among the fuel for this run, she said. The closed North Dallas mall site has been a sore subject for the city recently. Beck Ventures purchased it in 2012 with a $2 billion redevelopment plan that has failed to take off. Demolition finally began on the property in recent weeks after a series of fires and threats from the Dallas Police Department to designate the site as a habitual criminal property.
“I just cannot stand to see the waste at Valley View, and Schultz has been making some very bad decisions,” Evans said on her website. “She is voting for what Jaynie wants, not what District 11 wants and needs. I intend to hold her feet to the fire.”
Schultz could not immediately be reached for comment but told the Dallas Morning News she hopes to make more progress on the Valley View project.
“We’ve begun doing some fantastic work for the district and for the city, and I want to continue and complete that work,” Schultz said.
