Construction for a $800 million luxury resort and residential community is underway on Corpus Christi’s North Padre Island.
Dallas-based Ashlar Development, whose president is Steve Yetts, is at the helm of the project, called Whitecap. It’s slated for 600 single-family homes and condos, with prices for townhomes and duplexes expected to start at about $800,000, the Dallas Morning News reported.
Diamond Beach Holdings owns the property where 200 homesites are planned in the first phase. The full build-out should take about 10 years.
The idea for the project stemmed from the massive wave of new residents moving to Texas, many of whom are looking for waterfront properties as their second homes.
“All those people are moving here, and they’re looking for water, and there’s only so much fresh water and water sports,” Yetts told the outlet.
Whitecap is also set to include a hotel, dry stack marina and yacht club, cafes, shops, galleries and a nature preserve. A public town center on the property will offer dining, entertainment and retail. The bulk of homes will have canal access for boating and water sports.
“This high-quality development will bring new and expanded services, improved water quality and infrastructure and significant revenue to the city,” Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo told the outlet.
Between Whitecap and a nearby $700 million mixed-use development, the island is poised for a surge of activity that it hasn’t seen before, City Council member Dan Suckley said.
