Van Horn sits on the doorstep of one of West Texas’s hidden treasures: the Wylie Mountains, and they can be had for a price.
The 33,000-acre Wylie Mountain Ranch, in Culberson County, was recently listed for $27.2 million, or $824 per acre, MySA reported. The seller wasn’t identified. Ross Studer and Charles Davidson of Republic Ranches Real Estate are marketing the ranch, which is near the border of New Mexico, about two hours from El Paso.
Spanning desert grasslands and canyons, the ranch offers vistas that turn the horizon a distinct shade of red as the sun sets over the rugged terrain.
The ranch encompasses nearly the entire Wylie mountain range, providing the potential buyer the opportunity to manage the land and wildlife, which includes mule deer, elk, aoudad, blue quail, Gambel’s Quail, dove, migratory birds and some predator species.
Reaching 5,300 feet above sea level, the mountain range, named after pioneer settler Robert Wylie, consists of diverse habitats that vary from desert brushlands to flowering canyons. A largely unexplored sinkhole or cave is also part of the ranch.
Van Horn’s history is storied, if quiet. The town may be remembered for Charles Harrelson’s standoff with police decades ago, but today, the desert sanctuary appeals to adventurers and solitude seekers.
Other Texas ranch listings to hit the market in recent months include the 3 Creeks Ranch near Fredericksburg, listed for $42.5 million, or almost $483,000 per acre, and the nearby, Four Seasons Ranch, which came on the market in with a nearly $19 million price tag, about $7,900 per acre.
