New Buildings

A single school district accounted for both of the two most expensive new construction projects filed in Texas last week. Aldine Independent School District, which covers a portion of Houston, plans to spend $116 million to rebuild G.W. Carver High School. The new 251,441-square-foot school building at 2100 South Victory Drive will serve 900 students over three stories, including an auditorium and a gym. Work commences this September and ends July 2028.

Tempe, Arizona-based automotive retailer Carvana plans to spend $65 million on a new facility near the intersection of FM 973 and Texas 130 in Manor, Texas, near Austin. The filing describes a “commercial building for online automotive sales and services,” so it’s not clear whether the 172,000-square-foot project will include one of the company’s trademark car “vending machines.” Construction is set to begin this October and end October 2027.
