Downtown Dallas flagship Neiman Marcus to shutter

Saks Global will close down the upscale retailer at the end of September

After months of turbulence, Saks Global announced they will officially be closing the flagship Neiman Marcus department store in Downtown Dallas at the end of September.

The store, which sits at 1618 Main Street, was one of the downtown area’s anchors. Before Neiman Marcus was bought by Saks Global, the upscale retailer was founded in Dallas in 1907. The chain of luxury retail stores was purchased by Saks for $2.7 billion in 2024. Saks filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January of this year following a missed $100 million interest payment.

The future of the store has been in limbo since February 2025. When Saks initially announced the store would be closing, city officials and the real estate industry forced the company to keep it open through the holiday season. After a little under a year-and-a-half of uncertainty, the store will be finally closing, according to the Dallas Morning News.

“It is not an easy decision, but it is a final decision,” Saks Global CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck told the publication. Elements of the iconic store will be transferred to the company’s NorthPark site. The NorthPark location does more than 10 times the sales of the downtown store, according to the outlet.

Saks has been closing or selling Neiman Marcus stores all over the country. The Shops at Willow Bend location in Plano was sold, elements of the San Francisco Union Square location were sold too, and the location at 9700 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills was also sold off.

Losing the Neiman Marcus store is the second gut punch in 24 hours for Downtown Dallas. Yesterday, the Dallas Mavericks confirmed that they would be building a long-anticipated new stadium at the site of the former Valley View mall instead of downtown, and exiting the American Airlines Center at some point between now and 2031 when their lease expires.
