Grimes County officials voted to approve a new tax investment zone and tax abatement, essentially giving Elon Musk’s Terafab in Aggieland a boost worth billions.
The June 3 vote installed SpaceX Reinvestment Zone No. 1, nixing property taxes on a thousand-plus acres of land to be used for the Terafab. The Terafab is a joint venture between arms of Musk’s companies SpaceX, Tesla and xAI, and will be tapped to produce semiconductor chips in the mostly rural county northwest of Houston, according to the Houston Business Journal.
Grimes County relayed news that Musk’s companies have committed $55 billion of investment for the project before a Wednesday public hearing. If every aspect of the plan is completed, the figure could balloon to $119 billion. The meeting also featured rare public comments by a Terafab project representative. John Federspiel, senior director of Starlink product engineering, said the project would assist Grimes County schools for career and education pathways.
Additionally, Federspiel said that the project would pay for county road damages that occurred during construction. Gibbons Creek Reservoir will be utilized as Terafab’s water source for operations. During the call for vote, county commissioner Dave Tullos said that Terafab will receive a 100 percent tax abatement, a figure the outlet could not verify with county officials. Musk’s companies have publicly committed to create around 1,800 jobs for Terafab, as well as generate their own power for the site.
Throughout the past month, Grimes County residents have wondered what this means for their properties, and have criticized the county’s opaqueness in dealing with the reinvestment zone proposal. A full map of the zone was filed on May 29, but residents claim it’s still unclear what exact parcels and properties are going where. Several speakers who were nominally pro-Terafab asked the city to get the development’s leaders to get more protections for residents, as well as the county’s water and wildlife resources, according to the outlet.
