Caterpillar, a worldwide construction and engineering manufacturer that calls suburban Dallas home, is planning an expansion of its headquarters around three miles down the road from its current one at the Towers at Williams Square.
The company is expected to spend $36 million to renovate portions of an office property at 901 West Walnut Hill Lane in Irving. Initial phases of the project are slated to cover 107,000 square feet and are expected to be completed around August 2027, according to the Dallas Morning News. The total square footage of the Las Colinas offices is pegged at over 400,000 square feet.
The details of the project were filed to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation last week, and there’s the possibility that the project pivots over time. Filings with the state show the nickname for the development is Project Stone. San Francisco-based Gensler is listed as the architecture firm retained for project design.
901 West Walnut Lane was previously the headquarters of Zales before becoming a site for locally-based office furniture company Vari. Caterpillar purchased the site from Vari last year, according to the outlet. The new, renovated space will be used to provide more workspace for Caterpillar’s growing workforce, as well as provide space to host dealers and customers.
The former Zales complex was filled with around 3,000 workers at one point, according to the outlet. Caterpillar moved to the Dallas-Fort Worth metro in 2022 from Deerfield, Illinois.
The company known for the iconic CAT logo on its excavators and bulldozers is hardly the only high-profile Dallas company looking to change up their office space this summer. Morgan Stanley, Prudential, the Texas Stock Exchange and Colliers are all moving pieces of their companies around in Uptown Dallas and beyond.
AT&T is in the middle of building out a campus in Plano, Samsung is moving into the northern suburb and the NHL team the Dallas Stars are building a new hockey arena and entertainment facility there as well.
