The Austin suburb of Buda is receiving $1.6 million in federal funds to revamp the sewer system and build a new commercial corridor.

The federal funds are coming from the omnibus appropriations bill signed by President Joe Biden, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) announced Monday.

“This federal funding will open 70 acres as a strategic priority area for economic development by providing wastewater service for the first time,” Doggett said in a statement to the Austin Business Journal.

The future commercial hub will stretch along Robert S. Light Boulevard which connects I-35 to Deep Eddy Vodka Distillery on South Loop 4– an extension of Buda’s Main Street.

“This $1.6 million will supplement efforts by the city of Buda, which faces so many costly demands in such a rapidly-growing community,” said Doggett. “It is funding that can go directly – and quickly – toward foundational infrastructure for businesses along a new commercial corridor to serve our neighbors and create more local jobs.”

As a standout submarket in Texas’ Hill Country –between San Antonio and Austin– Buda has captured the attention of many residential developers from around the country. Just last month, MileStone Community Builders announced plans for a 775-acre residential community with 2,500 houses in the $350,000-plus range.

D.R. Horton is working on a 1,000-acre development called Prairie Lakes that will include 2,200 single and multi- family homes. The town is also awaiting the completion of Buda Midway, an 800,000-square foot industrial park from United Properties.

The funding will enable Buda to “add infrastructure to open up an area that is prime for development,” says Traci Anderson, executive director for the Buda Economic Development. “This will provide infrastructure for businesses coming in and provide a more shovel-ready opportunity to quickly build and bring additional jobs and income to our community,” she said in a statement.
