Austin-based La Corsha Hospitality Group is moving forward with building a long-stalled, $24 million boutique hotel on the grounds of the city’s historic Green Pastures farmhouse.
Green Pastures, located at 811 W. Live Oak Street in the South Austin neighborhood of Bouldin Creek, is currently the home of Mattie’s, a well-regarded restaurant serving southern fare.
Construction of a new 66,000 square-foot, 63-key hotel on the grounds of the property is slated to begin in November 2022 and complete in April 2023, according to a state filing.
The project’s been three and half years in the making. La Corsha, which had filed plans for the hotel with the city of Austin Historic Landmark Commission in October 2021, had expected construction to be completed in April 2021, the Austin Business Journal reported.
In October 2019, the hotel’s architect George Wilcox of Clayton & Little Architects pulled plans from the commission’s meeting agenda to address concerns that its proposed design didn’t fit with Green Pastures’ architectural aesthetic.
The farmhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural significance and is registered as a Texas Historic Landmark and a city of Austin Historic Landmark.
The three-story Green Pastures Hotel wIll be constructed on land south of the Green Pastures farmhouse. The hotel will have an event space, a swimming pool and an underground parking garage.
La Corsha President Jeff Trigger did not return The Real Deal’s call for comment.
South Austin, like many of the city’s prime neighborhoods, has attracted investors from all over the country.
Just this month, Stephen Ross’ Related Companies, one of New York City’s largest landlords, picked up 510 S. Congress Avenue, about two miles east of Green Pastures from Nate Paul’s distressed World Class Holdings for $65 million.
Nate Paul had agreed to pay $95.1 million in a winning auction bid for the six-acre parcel which is home to Ego’s famous South Austin dive bar, and also offices and apartments, but then opted out of closing on the property in August 2022.
With Ross closing on the property, Austinites should not be surprised if an ambitious project along the lines of Related’s Hudson Yards development in Manhattan, The Grand LA in Los Angeles and The 78 in Chicago will emerge from the site.
