Here’s a potential pad for the discerning secret agent — or anyone who spies an opportunity to upgrade and has millions of dollars to spend on the urge.
It’s the lakefront mansion that belongs to Robert Rodriguez, the acclaimed filmmaker with the Spy Kids franchise to his credit and a track record that has helped put Texas on the map as a production center for the movie business.
And it comes with artsy credential fitting for its owner, who has complemented the box-office smash of Spy Kids films with critically acclaimed productions including a trilogy that includes “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”. Indeed, the Rodriguez manse, which carries an asking price of $8.9 million, was designed by O’Neil Ford, a major influence of the 20th century who remains known as the grandfather of Texas Modernism,” the Dallas Morning News reported.
The home on Lake Travis goes back to 1962, and Rodriguez refers to it as “The Bond House” in reference to that decade’s vibe as reflected in the early movies of that spy series, according to the listing.
It is billed as a mix of “mid-century design and modern luxury,” with brick and other materials used to help beat the Texas heat while complementing the natural surroundings of the structure. It spans 5,200-square-feet, with four bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths. The asking price comes to $1,712 per square foot.
The price tag reflects the ongoing growth of the luxury residential market in Austin, where listings have ranged upward to $50 million in recent years, with lakefront typically drawing the top prices.
Rodriguez bought the home in 2018, setting up his main residence about 15 miles from his production studio.
