A Dallas-based megachurch pastor is working to increase affordable housing in South Florida.
Rev. T.D. Jakes’ real estate company, Reverend T.D. Jakes Real Estate Ventures, is partnering with Miami developer New Urban Development to build rental complexes in Miami Gardens and Hallandale Beach, the Dallas Morning News reported. New Urban Development is an affiliate of the Urban League of Miami.
The Miami Gardens development will be a senior living complex with 150 units on 7 acres. It will be located adjacent to Miami Gardens Senior Family Center at 18630 Northwest 183rd Street.
The Hallandale Beach project is an apartment complex with 200 units on 5 acres. This development will be located on Northwest Eighth Avenue between Third Court and Fourth Street.
Reverend T.D. Jakes Real Estate Ventures also plans to redevelop a former Army base in Atlanta. The company recently obtained city approval to move forward with its plan to convert about 95 acres at former Fort McPherson into residences, retail, offices and a senior living complex, CoStar reported. Some of the units are slated to be reserved for affordable housing. The former base is also the site of Tyler Perry Studios, a U.S. Food & Drug Administration lab, and a U.S. Veterans Affairs clinic.
The base closed in 2011 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure program.
Unrelated to his real estate ventures, Jakes made news this week when rumors swirled on social media about his participation in sex parties hosted by music mogul P. Diddy, who has been accused of sexual assault in four separate lawsuits this year. Jakes denied the claims in a Christmas Day sermon.
