Hines, HKS to develop Houston Astros entertainment district

The Houston Astros may have fallen short of another World Series victory, but it has something else to celebrate.

The team is making strides with its planned development next to Minute Maid Park, set to include a 17-story, 300-key hotel with about 60,000 square feet of retail and entertainment space, the Houston Business Journal reported. 

The project is inspired by successful developments like the Battery Atlanta in Atlanta and Ballpark Village in St. Louis, featuring mixed-use aspects adjacent to baseball stadiums. 

Astros owner Jim Crane hopes to start construction on this venture by the end of 2024. While an estimated cost and construction timeline has yet to be established, the project aims to create an entertainment district that can be utilized year-round, catering not only to Astros games but also other sporting events in Houston.

The Astros have tapped Houston-based Hines for development and Dallas-based HKS Architects for the master plan. 

This endeavor has been in the works for years, as the Astros purchased the property on Texas Avenue and Hamilton Street in 2016, eventually acquiring the entire city block in 2019. The property, a parking lot, spans 2.27 acres and is situated on the southeast corner of the stadium.

In addition, the Astros have made a long-term commitment to Houston by extending its lease for Minute Maid Park through 2050, paving the way for further investment in the area surrounding the stadium, the outlet said. With this development, the Astros aim to enhance its downtown presence and offer a vibrant year-round destination for sports fans and the community.
