Spirit Halloween finds silver lining of big-box retail flops in Houston

Seasonal chain takes 25 high-profile locations where former tenants went belly up

Spirit Halloween Pops Up in 25 Vacant Retail Sites in Houston

Spirit Halloween has revealed 25 Houston-area locations for its pop-up stores this fall, continuing its annual strategy of short-term leases in recently vacated retail spaces.

The holiday store chain, based in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, plans to open about half the locations in August, with the remainder marked “coming soon” on the company’s website, according to a report from the Houston Business Journal. The company’s short-term leases provide temporary relief for landlords looking to fill empty storefronts and stimulate foot traffic at their properties.

The seasonal retailer is moving into former sites of major chains that have shuttered. The list of former tenants features many of the highest-profile bankrupt brands in retail for recent years, including Party City, Conn’s, Big Lots, Joann Fabrics, BuyBuy Baby, Tuesday Morning and Forever 21.

Spirit Halloween locations typically vary in size between 5,000 and 50,000 square feet, according to its website.

The company utilizes this temporary approach to secure high visibility and prime locations ahead of its fall selling season, according to the Business Journal. In terms of scope, last year the chain opened a record 1,525 locations, while the total for this year is still undetermined.

The outlet compiled a list of the spots in Houston where Spirit Halloween will open in August, together with the previous tenants:
