$19M River Oaks mansion among year’s priciest home sales

Philanthropists Martha Long and Sean Wade bought 1938-built estate

Among the top listings sold in Houston last month, the most expensive home was also the oldest.

A 1938 mansion at 2110 River Oaks Boulevard was asking $18.9 million when it sold on July 31, according to the Houston Association of Realtors. That’s $11 million more than the second-highest listing, a 2024 build in Piney Point Village. The asking price amounted to $2,004 per square foot. The sale price wasn’t disclosed.

Laura Sweeney of Compass represented the buyers, philanthropists Martha Long and Sean Wade, according to property records. Long is the daughter of Cornelia Long and the late Meredith Long, who was a well-known gallerist. Sweeney also represented the seller, the estate of the late Larry Brookshire.

The 1.6-acre gated estate includes the 9,400-square-foot main house, remodeled in 2000, and two other dwellings that were built in 2012: a 1,400-square-foot, two-bedroom guest apartment over the garage, and a 1,000-square-foot “entertainment pavilion” by the pool.

The house is in the River Oaks Country Club Estate subdivision, anchored by the eponymous golf club founded a little over a century ago. River Oaks frequently takes the top spot for luxury sales in Houston; in May, one street in the River Oaks neighborhood, Inverness Drive, accounted for $23 million in sales. Two of the three most expensive single-family homes for rent in Houston in July were in River Oaks. The third most-expensive home in Houston last month was an 8,400-square-foot mid-century modern house at 2411 River Oaks Boulevard, which was asking $7.8 million, or $919 per square foot, when it sold on July 14.

Sweeney also sold the most expensive Houston home in March, a European-inspired estate at 19 West Lane in Montrose.Residential developments underway in River Oaks include a St. Regis condo project at 102 Asbury Street, the brand’s first purely residential development in Texas, and the RO, a Transwestern development that will include an Auberge Resorts Collection hotel.
