A name synonymous with barbecue in Texas is plotting a multi-use development in San Antonio.

The family behind Terry Black’s BBQ wants to build a restaurant, a three-story hotel with a spa and a parking garage at 2100 Broadway Street, less than 2 miles northeast of downtown, the San Antonio Business Journal reported

The family bought the 1.5-acre site in 2021, with plans to create something that would blend in with the surrounding area.

“We’re not looking to come in there and just do a stale office building or hotel building or anything like that,” family member Mark Black told the outlet. “We want to very much fit in with the vibe and the history.”

While specific plans for the project have yet to be revealed, the hotel will have rooms in three floor plans, ranging between 350 and 600 square feet. The hotel will also have its own restaurant, separate from the barbecue joint, and a private member’s club. Austin-based Chioco Design has been tapped as the architect.

The Lower Broadway Corridor is experiencing a surge in new development. GrayStreet Partners and Fulcrum Development are planning a 15-acre mixed-use project, dubbed the BESA District, in Government Hill.  Plus, Sandstone Developments recently renovated the Ranch Motel, turning the rundown property into a boutique hotel.

The Terry Black’s family has another mixed-use development up its sleeve in South Austin. In November, it bought the former Elks Lodge, at 700 Dawson Road, with plans to turn the 3.7-acre site into a membership-based club that would feature a restaurant, pool and boutique hotel.
