San Antonio-based grocery chain H-E-B is planning to build a 125,000-square-foot store northeast of San Antonio, in Converse.

Construction is set to begin in September, with the store expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026.

The arrival of an H-E-B store is often a sign of rapid growth in an area. Converse, which has a population of about 30,000, has seen an estimated 9.1 percent growth between 2020 and 2023.

H-E-B is expanding its presence in Central Texas with plans for a store just northeast of its downtown headquarters.

The San Antonio-based grocery chain is planning to build a 125,000-square-foot store in Converse, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the San Antonio Business Journal reported

The proposed location, designated “San Antonio 53,” is at 10137 Interstate 10 East, near the I-10 and Loop 1604 interchange, just under 20 miles from downtown San Antonio

Construction is slated to begin in September, with the store expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026. Arkansas-based pb2 architecture + engineering is leading the design for the project.

The addition of an H-E-B location in Converse is part of the grocery chain’s broader expansion strategy, which includes future stores in Alamo Ranch and near the University of Texas at San Antonio.

The arrival of an H-E-B store is often a strong indicator of rapid growth in the area. Converse is no exception. The town grew an estimated 9.1 percent between 2020 and 2023 and is home to about 30,000 people, according to the Texas Demographics Center.

The city’s population growth is driven by an increase in residential subdivisions and industrial development linked to San Antonio’s role in the U.S.-Mexico trade corridor.

H-E-B has been expanding its presence throughout Texas, with a strong focus on markets around Dallas-Fort Worth, a market it entered a few years ago. The grocery chain recently launched new stores in Frisco and Plano and is expanding further with upcoming locations in Allen, Celina, Melissa and Rockwall.

H-E-B is also planning to open its first Dallas location. The chain recently secured 10 acres at the southeast corner of Hillcrest Road and LBJ Freeway, which it will have to rezone before construction can begin.
