A Hempstead developer wants to put a new gas station on the site of an abandoned one next to a Southampton roundabout — exactly what some community members do not want, according to the Southampton Press.

Two gas stations are across the street from the development site at 9 and 11 Flanders Road, where the developer also aims to construct a 7-Eleven.

A community group successfully fought a gas station proposed for the property in 2016 and will do the same for the new proposal. The group wants something more akin to the office project that was recently developed next door.

The gas station needs some discretionary approvals to be built. The Southampton Planning Board is set to look at the proposal next week.

Fuel stations are expected to gradually decline in use over the next decade or two as Americans switch to electric vehicles, the vast majority of which are recharged at their owners’ homes. One city, Petaluma in northern California, has even enacted the nation’s first ban on new gas stations. [Southampton Press] — Dennis Lynch
