A Southampton village historic preservation board wants to alter the expand the review guidelines for demolishing a home.

Currently, the code requires reviews only for homes outside the historic district that were built before 1926, according to the Southampton Press. The code change — proposed by Southampton’s Board of Architectural Review and Historic Preservation in collaboration with the Village Planning Commission — would expand to a rolling 50-year date.

If implemented today, a review would be required to demolish any home in Southampton built before 1971. That would make it far more difficult to tear down those homes.

The board will hold a public hearing on the measure next month. [SP] — Dennis Lynch
