Members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation is pushing Southampton to buy a property located in the tribe’s ancient burial ground, and has the support of a legendary rocker.

Advocates include Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters, who voiced support for the request at a board meeting last week, Newsday reported.

The 4.5-acre property at 536 Montauk Highway, which is on the market, encompasses the summit of Sugar Loaf Hill, where the tribe has buried their dead for 3,000 years. The property is listed with Douglas Elliman for $6 million.

Shinnecock Nation Tribal Council Trustee Kelly Dennis called it “the most significant Indian burial site” in the state.

If the board approves a deal, the Peconic Land Trust would use $5.3 million from the Community Preservation Fund to buy the property and demolish the six-bedroom home there.

Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman voiced support for the purchase and said the board would vote on it at its June 8 meeting.
