Zeckendorf revives condo development near United Nations

Zeckendorf Development is planning to build a 44-story, 240,000-square-foot condominium tower for diplomats at a stalled construction site across the street from the United Nations on First Avenue between East 46th and East 47th streets, DNAinfo reported.

Zeckendorf, which paid $160 million for the site in 2007, intends to build 87 large apartments. Each would be an average of 2,500 square feet, with 12-to-16-foot high ceilings.

“There’s a great need for dedicated diplomatic housing,” said developer William Zeckendorf, who presented the plan at a meeting of the Community Board 6 earlier this week. “New York plays a role in the international community as a host to these nations, and it’s a very important role.”

International architectural firm Foster & Partners has been hired to design the project, he said, which may break ground towards the end of 2012, with a completion date in 2014. [DNAinfo]
