Harlem’s Studio Museum to get new $122M space

Building to be demolished to make way for 70K sf facility

The Studio Museum in Harlem is planning to replace its 1914 facility with a new, $122 million building, to begin construction in 2017.

The current 60,000-square-foot facility will be replaced by a 70,000-square-foot building designed by British architect David Adjaye, the designer of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, the New York Times reported. The Studio Museum is dedicated to displaying works by African-American artists.

New York City is contributing $35.3 million to the new project, and the Ford Foundation is contributing $3 million. The rest will be raised from other sources.

The new facility will be located on the same footprint as the current building, at 144 West 125th Street. The museum plans to continue some activities off site during construction, which is slated to take place from 2017 to 2019. [NYT] — Tess Hofmann
